Review of Flight (2012) by Gerardo R — 11 Aug 2013
This is a well executed character study film. Washington, to my knowledge, has never made a mediocre film, they are all great to watch; especially for his performances. Flight takes us into a man wrestling with alcohol and drug addictions when his airline passenger plane crashes.
He has been addicted for so long, that working under the influence is his norm. While he becomes a hero for the manner in which he handles the plane, his own addictions take center place. I felt that the movie dealt with his addiction masterfully.
His struggle did not seem forced or superficial, instead, it seemed very plausible. In a way, this can be a disturbing film when you think through the events and the consequences at many levels. As a film, the story is well told as you have a man wrestling with his own demons and failure in handling personal relationships.
There are moments that a superficial religious angle sneaks in, that it is laughable, but in a way, that is the grasp that many have of their own faith that has not explored the depths of an intricate religious tradition.
Denzel carries the film from beginning to end and his performance is nothing short of astounding.
