Review of Flight (2012) by Robert M — 10 Jul 2013
With a gripping start and satisfying conclusion, this drama about alcoholism doesn't get to grips with the devastating effects this affliction can have as well as it thinks it does. Denzel is good, but you get the feeling he's taking this pretty easy.
Zemeckis goes for his trademark sentimentalism and oversteps the mark, Flight never finds a balance between the down of the alcohol, and the up of the cocaine, so really sags for the most part. John Goodman turns up playing Jeff Bridges in the Big Lebowski, and unfortunately disappears for most of the film.
Flight wishes it was as good as Apollo 13 and Blow combined, but just isn't. If you are interested in alcoholism as a case in film, watch The Man Who Feel To Earth.
