Review of Flatliners (2017) by Todd L — 28 Sep 2017
In the early '90s, a movie about some med students who played with near-death experiences came out. Now, it's back. Is it a resurrection, or just another dead-on-arrival remake?
FLATLINERS (2017).
Honestly, it was ok. At a little under 2 hours, it moves at a decent pace, & it gets right to the meat of the story; it is a remake, but it takes itself seriously, & it improves upon the existing material with better effects & tone.
The cast is decent, each flatliner conveys both enlightenment, & the terror of past demons coming to haunt them, the price of their enlightenment.
The effects are ok. When flatlining, the surroundings range from CGI ethereal, to slasher film practical sets & effects, they work well enough.
The music was kind've generic, but functional.
Overall, Flatliners (2017) is a pretty decent, if slightly generic, update of a (IMHO) sub par suspense flick. The effects are an improvement on the original, the cast feels more organic, & the suspenseful scenes had some genuine scares. Well worth 3 stars out've 5; not quite a heart-stopper, but ok.
