Review of Flatliners (1990) by David K — 20 Oct 2008
Very eerie, very stylized, and very premature. The best part of this movie is the first half-hour. It sets the tone, characters, and story up very well. While I don't believe that any medical school would be located in a greek-pillared auditorium, it certainly adds to the fantasy element.
About the premise, it's arguably one of the coolest ideas ever conceived. Unfortunately, they gave it to Joel Schumacher and that means bad. For the life of me, I don't know how that man is still making movies.
Regardless, he slipped this one in and it isn't half bad. Unfortunately, a film dealing with scientific and religious issues surrounding life and death should have a wealth of meaningful shots/dialogue.
The film just crapped out on itself and turned into a supernatural thriller. For what it is, "Flatliners" will entertain, but with such an awesome premise, I expected something a little better, even from the lackluster Joel Schumacher.
