Review of Flashdance (1983) by Matthew A — 14 Jun 2010
This is one of the few quintessential 80s movies that I somehow managed to make it through 30 years of life without seeing. I can now safely say that I was not missing out on anything.
The plot is a cliche within a cliche, with a "poor girl falls in love with a rich guy" storyline wrapped up within a "poor girl has big dreams" storyline. I think the only reason this film became such a big deal is because the soundtrack is memorable. On top of that, the body doubles used for Jennifer Beals' dancing sequences are so painfully obvious that I find it astounding that people were surprised to learn she did not do her own dancing.
In short, I'm glad to have seen this because it is so ingrained in 80s pop culture, but it really is a pretty crappy movie.
