Review of Flashdance (1983) by Danielle B — 22 May 2018
This is a dance movie from the 80's. It's not the deepest, most thought-provoking film, but depending on who you are, it's chock-full of great entertainment.
I think this movie is unfairly judged for what it is. It's a flashy, fun, performance piece featuring timelessly impressive choreography and great 80's hits.
Could the story be better? Absolutely. But this movie isn't without value. Flashdance's protagonist challenges the archetype of "the erotic dancer" or "stripper with a heart of gold" by presenting us with a sophisticated, hard-working young woman who is sexually empowered and unafraid to challenge the men around her. She's an erotic dancer and part-time welder who can walk into a prestigious ballet school with an audition that says "I deserve to be here as much as anyone else.".
This movie is undoubtedly not for everyone, but it's dance sequences should not be overlooked, and it's perfectly inspirational to the right viewer.
