Review of Flashbacks of a Fool (2008) by Morgan L — 20 Apr 2008
Perhaps the overarching story arc is not all that remarkable, but I was less interested in the psychological development of Daniel Craig's character than I was impressed with the cinematic treatment of "another lifetime".
After the cute but largely cartoonish Son of Rambow, it was a real shock to see childhood memories dealt with in such a rich and strange way here. Everything about it: the cinematography, the set pieces, the supporting performances (how brilliantly cast it was) worked to create those crashing waves of another place and time.
It was all the more remarkable because I had been disappointed when the film's first act ended and Daniel Craig's flashback began. The landscape of rich, lonely LA life is endlessly fascinating to me, and I was sorry that to have it taken away. But it was worth it.
