A dark story, filmed in broad daylight and sunshine... That alone makes it quite unique. The performances are great, the '80s era is great, the story is great and the scenery breathtaking. The only thing I didn't like was the underdevelopment of characters in their early years and a solid, strong excuse of why the relationship of Boots, Joe and Ruth went astray.
.. All the rest are explained and justified perfectly...
