Review of Flashbacks of a Fool (2008) by Kristin A — 05 Jan 2009
Flashbacks of a Fool was a little different then I thought it was. Daniel Craig does a really good job in the film and the plot is pretty solid. Daniel Craig plays a narcissistic spoiled actor that gets a phone call one day saying that his best friend when he was younger has died.
The movie then flashes back to when Daniel Craig's character Joe Scott was a teenager and lived in a beautiful little cottage on the beach in England. The young Joe Scott and the situations he gets in are actually more interesting then Daniel Craig.
The flashback takes up most of the movie to the point that the audience forgets about Craig. So when it goes back to him your lost. But that doesn't have to be a bad thing. It's different then the usual back and forth paralleling stories of young and old Joe Scott which is why I felt lost when it went back to Craig.
But in the end I didn't think his character learned anything at all. It didn't seem to have a story arc near the end. It just kinda stopped. The flashback actually had a beginning, middle and ending.
But the film all together didn't. That's not to say I still didn't enjoy it. The acting was good and most of the movie was engaging.
