Review of Flashbacks of a Fool (2008) by Nick B — 11 Jul 2009
A great soundtrack and decent performances make up for a distinct lack of depth to this film. It almost feels half finished and you're left feeling like a big chunk of the middle has ended up on the chopping room floor to keep the running time down.
Craig is probably the least affective actor in this drama, but let down by poor characterisation and poor script editing. Had his character, Joe, flashed back to a series of events regarding his friendship with Boots, there may have been some sympathy for his character. Instead, you are taken back to his sexual awakening, and how this led to him leaving the place where he grew up.
Does this make for a great movie? Not really. The best part is the retro music, and how it resurrects those nostalgic feelings of your own childhood.
