Review of Flash Point (2007) by Terry C — 21 Aug 2008
Hate to lower my reviewing standards here, but sadly this gets four stars just based on all the scenes of Donnie Yen shirtless in stonewashed jeans alone. There... I said it.
That being said the story itself is your typical Hong Kong action cop movie. Donnie Yen and Collin Chou steal the screen with their viseral presence as the film does not for a moment apologize for its intense pacing. The film quite honestly reminded of Infernal Affairs a little, but with fighting that felt so brutal and grounded in reality.
Of course I watch all my foreign films in subs, but I also check out the English dub. It isn't bad, but the center channel dialogue sound mix is so low I found myself turning it up to hear what they were saying only to have my speakers blown by music, fx, or action. Either way the performances were quite amazing especially by Donnie Yen.
Defintely one of Donnie Yen's best films and for any Hong Kong film fanatic will surely agree it's intense to watch. As a geek at the video store saw it in my hand and started panting, dropping to his knees and worshiping it saying, "Omg your about to watch such an amazing piece of Hong Kong cinema.".
Amazingly entertaining indeed. Did I forget to mention Donnie Yen is shirtless in stonewash jeans?
