Review of Flash of Genius (2008) by Roxanne R — 24 May 2009
What caught my eye about this movie was the" ordinary guy going against a huge corporation" approach/storyline. Also the fact that it is based on a true story. Its about an engineering professor named Dr.
Robert Kearns (played so well by Kinnear) who through trial and error invented the intermittent wiper- a device that the big 3 (GM/Ford/Chrysler) and other auto makers can use in their cars. The engineers for Ford had been tinkering and trying to come up with it but were unsuccessful, yet this college professor discovered how to make it work.
He tries to cut a deal with Ford, but instead the company steals his idea/work. Out of principle and his moral convictions, he decides to do the unthinkable- sue Ford. What ensues for the next 12 years is a frustating, amazing and incredible legal fight taken all the way to the courtroom so one man can prove to the nation that Ford stole his intermittent wiper idea and made millions out of it.
This movie gives new meaning to the term never underestimate the power of the human spirit! Along the lines of Erin Brockovich and The Pursuit of Happyness, you will cheer and side with Dr. Kearns because he is one determined and focused human being intent on bringing justice where deception took place.
