Review of Flash of Genius (2008) by Steven S — 22 Feb 2010
It's 1967. We've put satellites in orbit, men into space, and fly jet airplanes over Vietnam. We're only a few years from landing a man on the moon. Yet 10,000 engineers in Detroit have spent over a year trying to figure out how to make the intermittent windshield wiper. (the beginning of the total incompetence of US automakers?).
A college prof figures it out, tries to sell it to Ford, they screw him over and steal his idea. He ruins his life and destroys his marriage defending his patent in court and eventually wins millions in damages.
Fascinating true story, right? Unfortunately the movie is boring as hell. Don't waste your time and just read the New Yorker article about Dennis Kearns that the movie is based on.
Similar to the movie Tucker (small entrepreneur vs big company), which is a much better but less well known movie.
