Review of Flannel Pajamas (2006) by Joanne P — 10 Feb 2008
Flannel Pajamas is one of those rare movies that realises that something huge and improbable does not need to happen to make a good love story. The movie follows a couple from their first blind date through their dating relationship, engagement, marriage, and a number of relationship problems.
It was a very realistic account of love...without the Hollywood veneer. The sex scenes seemed tender, rather than gratuitous and the arguments were not overblown, but often mundane. The couple has complicated family dynamics and some core differences that make it difficult to get along.
Justin Kirk, who plays Stuart is a great actor and I have thoroughly enjoyed his work as Mary Louise Parker's slacker brother in law on weeds. Julianne Nicholson is enchanting and beautiful in a decidedly non-Hollywood way.
Don't rent this movie if you want to be greatly entertained. This movie is more quiet and subtle than that. But, if you would like to see a nice character study and the beauty and pain of relationships (both romantic and familial), then I highly recommend it.
