Review of Flags of Our Fathers (2006) by Jeremy K — 17 Dec 2012
Director Clint Eastwood delivers a very good film much better than his last-Million Dollar Baby. I know people will compare it to Saving Private Ryan and say the opening battle scene is not even close to matching Ryan's. But Flags is a different kind of movie. It splits time between the battle of Iwo Jima and the campaign back home of the soldiers who raised the flag there for that inspiring image forever burned in everyone's consciousness. And the three soldiers that are chosen must carry the burden that the others who helped raised it are no longer alive. Adam Beach is the standout as one of the soldiers who is Indian and must constantly deal with racism everywhere he turns. It's truly a great performance. How he was not nominated for Best Supporting Actor just shows how flawed the Oscars are. And Ryan Phillippe is actually pretty good also. The battle scenes are intense and graphic and the scenes back home are dramatic and touching. A very well made film.
Ira: "Yeah, we're in the goddamn picture".
Bud: "Six guys raising a flag over Iwo Jima. Victory is ours. You're three of them, right?".
Doc: "This was the fifth day sir. The battle went on for thirty-five more".
Bud: "Well, what'd you do, raise a goddamn flag every time you stopped for lunch?".
Ira: "Can I hit this guy?".
