Review of Flags of Our Fathers (2006) by Philip S — 30 May 2012
Surprisingly disappointing. The subject matter is fascinating: the story of the men in the iconic photograph that may not be what it seems. The film examines war, fame and guilt. Pretty powerful stuff.
Except it isn't. The film is shockingly dull and repetitive (Ira is a drunk - WE GET IT. Move on). It suffers greatly due to the weak performances of its 3 leads (Ryan Phillippe, normally comedic Jesse Bradford and the always far-too-earnest Adam Beach).
The supporting cast is far superior (Robert Patrick, Barry Pepper, John Hickey etc). I was most disappointed with the way a particular mystery was resolved near the end of the film. Eastwood is known for minimum takes and sometimes it really shows.
In the end, I found myself not really caring about the soldiers - which is pretty damning in a war film where the drama ought to be built in. The fact that the film received award consideration is testament to the fact that critics seem blinded by Eastwood's legend and straightforward (but often dull) direction.
Plays like a tv movie.
