Review of Flags of Our Fathers (2006) by Joshua G — 21 Feb 2011
The disjointed narrative was fully annoying and prevented me getting into the movie. I was also pissed at "Doc" for leaving Iggy and at Clint for glossing over what happened to the real Iggy.
The film came off as pablum trying to be all emotional and crap, it didn't work, just felt like schlock. Rene character needed a good beat down. The end portion that focussed on the writer of the book (Doc's son) pushed the cheese-fest over the edge into self promotion territory.
Too many characters were introduced, but never focused on so had a hard time figuring out who was who, who got killed and when, and that just made the whole thing pointless. Clint, you should have just given up on the modern day crap and stayed with the Iwo Jima battle, then the aftermath.
God forbid we have a linear narrative, but this subject matter almost demands it. Still, Jamie Bell was great, but underused. Clint's need for manufacturing sentimental "what is a hero" BS, his choice of "artistic"inter-cutting of flash forward/backward prevented any character identity or development.
What a waste. Poor Iggy, after what he went through to just get the brush off by both Doc and now Clint is horrible.
