Review of Flags of Our Fathers (2006) by Bobby D — 01 Oct 2011
A very solid film. What it made me think about was the "little" momenst in the film which actually are "bigger" than story itself. The fact that to wage WAR in 1944 the Fed had to sell bonds and the country was completely broke going into Iwo Jima.
Listen to these moments about the greater scheme of thinhs that made the 3 Marines "lie" about the "exact" details of the flag raisings. What would you personally sacrifice for the grater "good" of the nation? Integrity? The truth? A lot of personal stories.
Most touching was Ira Hayes. The bigotry of am L.A. 1940's bar not "serving indians" even those that fought for the country. One of Eastwood's better directorial efforts. A film with multiple personalities, that doesn't shift gears so hard as to not work in it's favor.
