Having this film considered as a two parter creates the immeadiate comparison between the two. With that comparison Letters from Iwo Jima was a superior film. 'Flags' was still a very good with an amazing job done by Adam Beach.
That being said the only real critique is some of the casting seemed like Eastwood just took people who did well in other War movies and inserted them into this one. The performances would been easier to soak in without having a known face behind it.
That is what perhaps puts Iwo Jima over top of Flags.
