Clint Eastwood crafts a beautiful film about the truth behind the propaganda of the flag raising at Iwo Jima. The movie looks beautiful and the acting is extraordinary. However, this movie fails to hold up next to other movies/miniseries of its ilk (Saving Private Ryan, Band of Brothers, etc.
). Something about it just seemed... lacking. I also had a problem with the way the story was told as it seemed to just bounce around a lot but not in the a way that formed a cohesive narrative. At times it seemed the movie was a flashback with the characters.
.. and then at others it seemed like it was one guy getting stories about his father from people. Maybe I missed something but that seemed to distract me from the rest of it. As I said, the ensemble cast was excellent.
I didn't have a problem with any of them. Now I'm set to watch the companion piece.
