Review of Five Minutes of Heaven (2009) by Howie V — 25 Jan 2011
It's a conflict of opposing interests. It's negation upon negation. Two men: one trying to live with what has happened to him, the other trying to live with what he's done. Either way each of them has to live with it. What's YOUR five minutes in Heaven? What would set you free? Is it reconciliation? Is it revenge? Kumbaya or "Let's kill these bitches"? If you're like me you see people. I mean really see them. I don't think it's a talent or a gift. A gift you can return. Anyway, here's a guy "Joe" with every reason in the world to hate...and they put him in play. Let's see him.
Whether you're Irish or Ugandan or Protestant or whatever this story is relevant. "It's not all cornflakes and sunshine" and a story doesn't always have to tie up all the loose ends. Just lay it down and let the audience sort it out themselves. Good storytelling. Two thumbs up!
"Once you have signed up to terror and joined the organization, the group, your mind closes right down. It becomes only our story that matters: not their story (the Catholics)." - Alistair.
