Review of Five Easy Pieces (1970) by Matt M — 12 Aug 2013
This movie is such a classic. A very young Jack Nicholson plays a very confused, frustrated, and emotionally stunted man who after leaving his prestigious family behind to go look for another life out west hears his father has had a stroke.
He comes from a family of musicians-piano players mostly, and was a prodigy when growing up. His dad wanted that. He didn't. When he comes home, he rekindles a friendship with his sister, and continues to make fun of his yuppy and clumsy brother, while also trying to steal his then girlfriend (and all the while neglecting his own).
The best parts of the movie are of course watching Jack Nicholson be Jack Nicholson. He is such a lonely man, yet with an attitude of indifference. He is content with nothing. It was sure enough a movie of the times.
..a man as unsure of his life as the period itself.
