Review of Five Easy Pieces (1970) by Tasha W — 25 Feb 2010
Proof again that American 70s films were groudbreaking as Bob Rafelson takes a European approach to a seemingly simple subject.
Nicholson is nicely toned down here as Bobby Dupea a man who seems to have no place be it working in various labouring jobs or with his family as a brilliant piano player.
When his father falls ill he decides to take his dizzy girlfriend(A wonderful Karen Black) along for the ride.
Of course the whole event becomes a nightmare for Bobby as his boring family and his girlfriend bring things to a head and he must decide what to do about it in probaly one of the bleakest endings to any american film of that time.
Rafelson has obviously watched a lot of Bergman ,Rohemer and other directors to gain this style and the film is very well crafted.
A film with brains and thats no bad thing.
