The whole thing is built around the epic image of the steamboat being slowly pulled up a hill by 100 Amazon villagers. It takes 20 minutes to get to the crest, and the image of the boat sliding down into the river is very cathartic.
Kinski is also insane, which seems to be the one thing keeping him alive.
