Review of Fitzcarraldo (1982) by Bernard O — 12 Jul 2008
Fitzcarraldo however is an epic piece of filmmaking from Herzog and Kinski, the latter dominating the film in the role of Fitzgerald, the opera-loving madman who wants to bring opera to the Peruvian jungle.
What follows is steamboat journey into the heart of the jungle and the efforts of the crew - and local tribes - to haul the boat over a mountain. All done for real by Herzog and his team. Totally captivating - it's maverick filmmaking the likes of which we see so rarely in this day and age.
