Review of Fitzcarraldo (1982) by Brian R — 29 Jan 2009
This is film-making on a truly monumental scale. The scene where Fitzgerald sails down the Pachitea and decides to try and soothe the invisible and increasingly irate natives by playing Caruso on his gramophone is one of many which loudly proclaim "GENIUS AT WORK".
He may have wanted to kill him on several occasions during filming, but Herzog succeeded in coaxing what was possibly a career-best performance out of Klaus Kinski in the lead role.
