Review of Fitzcarraldo (1982) by Alec B — 08 Jun 2010
One movie that cannot be forgotten no matter how hard you may try to forget.
Director Werner Herzog overcame his lead Actor's illness, another character's celebrity to be called away for "another concert", and dealing with the local indians miscmmunications in the peruvian jungles.
So Herzog forged ahead, getting kalus kinski as the lead, "Fitzcarraldo". Then Herzog managed to get the locals to "transform" that large ship over the thin strip of land to the next river.
Like the movie or not, credit must go to herzog to make a film that no one can even copy-cat.
Was Kinski a fruitcake? It matters not; kinski makes the movie what it is. That quality Kinski had was perfect for this Herzog production.
Herzog won best director at the 1982 cannes film festival and this movie was nominated for the coveted palme d'or, so there s some great validation for herzog's dogged determination and creativity.
In closing this review, fitzcarraldo was a true work of art, a true work of an uncompromising vision that will live forever.
