Review of Fish Tank (2009) by Ray H — 10 Mar 2010
A modest movie; a commentary on a working class British teen w/ no direction to her life. She is like a fish in a tank; swiming aimlessly; going no where. She is 15, and apparently not attending any school.
She wanders aimlessly from scene to scene in her life. The trite, day-to-day living depicted here rings true. Much of the movie is shot by a jittery hand-held camera. The film depicts a mother & her daughter who dont work; are not in school; do not have any apparent source of income; but they are just fine the way they are?? Their only interaction is thru hostility & studied indifference.
This is how lower socio-economic classes perpetuate themselves. Millions of people just have to have their next: drink, cigarette, joint, illicit prescription drug, illegal drug/substance, etc. This is a major focus of their lives.
They will always be with us. The teen is well played by Katie Jarvis. Her mothers boyfriend is well played by Michael Fassbender. The first hr held some promise; but I was checking my watch frequently during the last hr.
We initially want to root for the teens character; but she often beats any sympathy back w/ hostility. The story did not give me much reason to care abt these characters. Everyone seemed morally bankrupt.
This film was disappointing.
