Review of Fish Tank (2009) by Travis F — 15 Mar 2010
Not surprising that this film won the Jury Prize at the Cannes Film Festival this year. Mia is an angry and isolated teenager trying to grow up in an environment of poison with no positive role models, no outlet for her passion and seemingly no good prospects. The claustrophobic housing projects of her home perfectly cage this adolescent in thought and body.
Into her life comes an unlikely force, her mother's new boyfriend, Connor. Is he a father figure or a romantic interest? An uneasy tension belies and builds in each scene with Mia (Katie Jarvis) and Connor (Michael Fassbender) to its explosive climaxes (yes, that's plural). Sorry, the plucky Mia begins to realize that there are many roads her life may take.
