Review of Fish Tank (2009) by James T — 23 Mar 2010
Gritty, sombre offering from Andrea Arnold that features a fiery, attention grabbing debut performance from young Katie Jarvis as fiercely independent 15 year old Mia. A girl who is desperate to leave the Essex Estate where she lives with her slightly damanged mother and younger sis.
Her life is thrown into disarray with the arrival of her mothers new boyfriend (a deceptively charismatic Michael Fassbender) and while they form a bond quickly, events soon turn to a more adult nature.
Gripping and unsentimental with a surprisingly hopeful tone, it's a good, solid British offering.
