Review of Fish Tank (2009) by Rob T — 28 Mar 2010
This is a coming of age tale that that is told with intensity. In the opening sequence of the movie, Katie Jarvis explodes onto the screen giving off the impression that she is a caged animal, an analogy that is not far from the truth when we learn the details of her life.
It is a small movie, which also serves as a true to life portrait of working class England. The movie narrowly avoids pitfalls, and luckily ends up being neither tragic nor comic. Instead, the skillful script and direction delivers some of the most affecting scenes (one in particular) that I've seen in a movie theatre in quite a while.
What's wrong with the movie? Not much, perhaps its only flaw is it is so narrow in focus, and doesn't offer much except for a (maybe traditional?) coming of age story. And yet, for its genre, it is top notch.
