Review of Fish Tank (2009) by Duwi P — 13 Apr 2010
Some films are engineered to entice moviegoers who oftentimes prefer to dodge sugarcoated stories and choose to watch something that is unashamedly raw. Andrea Arnoldâ??s Fish Tank is that relief. It tells the coming of age story of 15 year old Mia, played brilliantly by new recruit Kate Jarvis (remember her name), and her solitary life regularly filled with misanthropic fury and her love for hip-hop.
Her single mom minimally cares for Mia and her younger sister, educating them with observably shrill sex and uneducating parties with her close friends. Everything in Miaâ??s life transitioned once her mom brings back her latest boyfriend, played by Michael Fassbender (who was so good in Inglourious Basterds and Hunger, and is equally exceptional here).
I wonâ??t say more besides that it does say something about the visceral power of a movie that I got apprehended when things start to get uneasy with Miaâ??s life. One of the joys of modern filmmaking is to watch emerging artists like Andrea Arnold, Kate Jarvis and Michael Fassbender do their magic.
Try and account Fish Tank to your watch list and see filmmaking lifted to the level of art.
