Review of Fish Tank (2009) by Julie S — 08 May 2010
An astoundingly true-to-life depiction of the downward spiral 15 year-old 'council estate scum', Mia Williams has been born into. It was all performed so naturally I felt I was eavesdropping in on her life rather than watching a young girl acting it all out.
Mia's circumstances are horrible and there is seemingly no way out for her, or the thousands of other girls and boys born into deprived families such as these. For that it is heart-breaking with few scenes of joy - watching Mia escape into her world of dance as she oversees the estate below her is of little comfort knowing that there is probably no way out of it for her.
This film contains a nerve-shredding scene in the final act which had my heart pounding and me peeking through my fingers as Mia seeks to take her revenge by kidnapping a little girl. Affecting and essential viewing.
