Review of Fish Tank (2009) by Marianne C — 15 Jun 2010
This true to life depiction of urban life in a small U.K. town is both a heart warming & soul destroying experience. It's by far the most realistic film of the year in my opinion, capturing every intricate detail of how suburban life is for a hostile & anti-social teenage girl with emotional issues to perfection.
I wouldn't blame anyone mistaking it for an "in your face-style" documentary to be honest. This achievement is largely made possible by the outstanding debut performance from first time actress Katie Jarvis.
At 18 years of age, a former school dropout & with no acting experience what so ever. Jarvis exudes such raw intensity & emotion that you will be hard pressed to lose interest in the journey she goes on.
I can also say with confidence that this is the best female performance I have seen all year & is easily one of the greatest debuts of all time. Inglorious Basterd's Michael Fassbender is in terrific form here as well, giving his pivotal role a charming & likable personality.
But make no mistake, this is Jarvis' show from start to finish, & what a show it is.
