Review of Fish Tank (2009) by Jebus C — 22 Jul 2010
It doesn't have the feeling of completion that you got from Andrea Arnold's last brilliant film Red Road but it does have a staggering performance from youngster Katie Jarvis and a strong turn from Hollywood bound Michael Fassbender.
Fish Tank has the same sense of gritty realism that made Red Road such a good film but at the same time you feel a connection to the characters emotional state. Which is very difficult to achieve without sentimentality.
And this film has none of that. Both this and Red Road remind me of the raw early projects of Martin Scorsese. The story stripped bare. Andrea Arnold will tackle Wuthering Heights next and it'll be interesting to see what kind of a spin she puts on it.
Ultimately I'd like to see her get the chance to work with some top notch talent. She really does deserve it as this is another superb film.
