Review of Fish Tank (2009) by Andrew S — 22 Jul 2010
Andrea Arnold is one of the best UK film makers working today, I think, a natural successor to the likes of Mike Leigh and Ken Loach in authentically capturing the feel of Britain at its most miserable with a keen humanist eye. She's helped here by a cast that really shine, and all the plaudits Katie Jarvis has received are certainly well-deserved, given the entire film transpires pretty much over her shoulder. And for all the grimness of this coming of age story, it doesn't cast the world as irredeemably so. There's even a good measure of positivity in how the film ends.
Oh, and worthy of note, by the way, is the girl who plays Jarvis' little sister, who nearly steals every scene she's in.
