Review of Fish Tank (2009) by Tamara H — 22 Feb 2011
A really heartbreaking tale, that is reminiscent of "The 400 Blows", only from a female perspective. There's not a lot of happiness in the characters or their relationships, just short bursts of peace that briefly hold them together.
Michael Fassbender's tour de force performance is the main attraction of the movie, displaying his talents as the greatest actor of his generation. Katie Jarvis was perfect, letting you feel sympathy and disgust for her simultaneously.
It's really unique in terms of its setting, even though England is a familiar country, its poverty and slums are hardly ever seen, because brits aren't really charming if they don't have wands and glasses.
I hope more movie like this come out of the U.K., in the spirit of Ken Loach style realism.
