Review of Fish Tank (2009) by Ed Fucking H — 27 Feb 2011
A pretty decent British troubled youth film. Katie Jarvis delivered a subdued and subtle performance as Mia, which was really in keeping with the overall tone of the film, which is verite style and generally gritty.
Mia isn't really a likeable character, but you do sympathize with her throughout the film as you realize that she doesn't really have any positive role models in her life. Her mother is constantly verbally abusive, seems unintrested in her children and more often than not behave like a child herself.
Her new boyfriend enters the fold early on in the movie and actually shows intrest and respect for Mia. Though their relationship is disturbing, you do feel good that someone is finally treating Mia with a modicum of respect.
The viewer should sense that this is unhealthy regardless and question his motives. The film is engrossing and you do feel a great deal of emotional investment for these characters, even if very few of them are really likeable.
Definently a movie that sticks with you after the end credits begin to role. Recommended.
