Review of Fish Tank (2009) by Sierra S — 04 Jun 2011
Fish Tank is so real that one might feel a strong sense of voyeurism after witnessing this raw and powerful drama that delves deep into poverty and the life of an angry young woman. Unlike An Education, Precious, and the Twilight series, this girl is actually deserving of our sympathy.
Kate Jarvis' portrayal is flawless and with all the damaged people that surround her it's only natural that she finds solace in such a gritty and aggressive release - streetdance. Arnold's fantastic direction really makes us feel the suffocation and despair this family endures which makes for a tough watch, but a rewarding one.
Some may dislike Fish Tank for it's arthouse clichà (C)s but I think it's quite an accurate representation - the greatest truths are usually the ugliest.
