Review of Fish Tank (2009) by Tom H — 04 Jun 2011
One of the better films in the genre of social critique set in England's lower class urban projects. Compelling at times, the story never really grabbed me. This may be due to the fact that I (57) did not really have a character to identify with and the director's constant playing with my expectations throughout the film.
Stereotypes are introduced then dashed only to return full force later on. This coerced me into the detached role of a neutral observer, when it probably would have been better to commit emotionally. Bottom line: not a pretty subject but a fairly good treatment of the subject that will keep you in your seat for the duration of the film.
