Review of Fish Tank (2009) by Sasikala K — 17 Feb 2012
Nothing short of brilliant in every respect. The casting was done by the woman who did Downton Abbey, which shows some amazing range, but I don't think she knows how to pick American actors. Regardless, this film is breathtaking.
I'm not going to tell you I understand Mia, the 15 year old main character, but I don't have to. I lived and breathed with her every second of the way and I ached for her pain. These English movies that take place in hideous 30 story apartment buildings, groups of them, that sit in the middle of nowhere, fields around them, called "housing estates", reveal something truly disgusting about British government and the thinking about providing affordable housing for the poor.
Watching Fish Tank, it's impossible to avoid wondering if this is where America is headed: uneducated, out of work masses alienated from everything, and at the same time ridiculous people like William and Kate, the future King and Queen.
We better watch out where we're going.
