There's nothing new about the written narrative of Fish Tank (a weaker retread of Thirteen and An Education) but the cinematography is brilliant. It never strays from our main character, Mia, and it embodies her with what it shows, and more so with what it doesn't --a tactic I often favor.

As a viewer you feel like you're on the outside, a voyeur, just like Mia does in her world. Katie Jarvis and Michael Fassbender are wonderful, and the film works best when it decides to shut up for a while. You never acquire the satisfaction you hope to gain out of a coming-of-age story either. Such is life.
