Review of First Snow (2006) by Cort J — 15 Jul 2007
Directed by MarkFergus.
Starring Guy Pearce, Piper Perabo, William Fichtner, J.K. Simmons.
After a weird palm reading, a man becomes convinced of a dire future and tries to survive. Pearce obviously love these singular, existential guy roles. But ?First Snow? is far from ?Memento? with its radically innovative script, there?s nothing of interest here that merit it cinematically. Weak characters, no foreplay, no build-up, and no drama. It was just badly written for its genre. And terrible casting. I mean, if you have to use William Fichtner, make the guy explode emotionally or not use him at all. I think it?s another wasted chance for Pearce to be in an ensemble where he obviously reacts well to others performances . You see, in an ensemble, he could tick off his co-stars, where he could either damn them or be damned. It was a dead note from the start.
Best Scene: Holing up from the first snow.
