Review of First Reformed (2018) by Stefan D — 21 May 2018
A redemption for Paul Schrader and a victory for all those carrying out his vision. In a story that follows very closely those themes put forth in Taxi Driver, Schrader makes a courageous effort to publicize his struggles with religion, with tremendous results.
Everything about this movie is intended to make the audience feel uncomfortable, from the humor, to the shot composition and direction, to its lack of musical accompaniment, leaving audiences thinking about it long after they've left the theater.
A truly spectacular picture.
