Review of First Reformed (2018) by Bishope P — 31 May 2018
Wow. Thats all I can say. The reviews lead me to see this one, as well as Ethan Hawke, who is a great actor, but I was left disappointed and empty at the end. Maybe thats the feeling Schrader was trying to invoke from the audience, a feeling of emptiness and despair.
I get it and I usually like bleak, depressing movies that battle faith and are thriller based and keep you guessing, but this was went nowhere. What started out as a great idea, solid plot and could have been a great movie in the vein of Taxi Driver, turned out to be just empty and confusing.
I'm not going to spoil the movie, by mentioning scenes for those that still want to listen to the hype of these lost critics that are clearly searching for something different in movies that they would rate this 98% is beyond me! The acting was great, but thats about it.
One thing, it will keep you engaged til the end, bleak but engaging as your anticipating the suspense to manifest into a climatic ending, but be prepared to leave empty with a feeling that you just wasted 2 hours that you will never get back.
