An interesting soul search, strangely reminiscent of Flannery O'Connor's WISE BLOOD, which was awkwardly brought to the screen by John Huston in the seventies. Schrader embeds TAXI DRIVER desperation in this new X-ray of loneliness and social anxiety, ratcheting it up as a crescendo to one of the most abrupt endings in cinema history.
You're left sighing and murmuring, 'wait, what?' as the credits roll. Some stories work better as fiction on the printed page, where this one and WISE BLOOD would always be more effective than on screen where they lack believability, in my opinion.
