Review of First Reformed (2018) by Eric F — 01 Nov 2018
FIRST REFORMED - Movie Review.
Directed by Paul Schrader.
Reverend Ernst Toller (Ethan Hawke) is asked to counsel the husband of a member of his church who is a radical environmental activist. Reverend Toller's life quickly spirals out of control. He finds violence may be the only means to redemption.
This movie is about faith, the past, hope, despair. It is deeply spiritual at its core. It brings up deep questions of the Christian tradition. It's a slow burning movie where you can feel things are deeply wrong without them explicitly saying so. The dialogue is excellent. It almost reminds me of the novel "Frankenstein"-the debates and arguments really pull you in. The performances are excellent. Unique picks for roles that really work. This is a beautifully shot movie with a highly debatable conclusion.
If this movie reminds you even slightly of other films before it, it's because this is the screenplay writer of the influential film "Taxi Driver".
FIRST REFORMED is excellent.
