Review of First Reformed (2018) by Nadjib R — 26 Aug 2018
First Reformed, through its steady build-up, proves to be engaging on so many levels, it paves a way for so many questions which are left unanswered, I would describe its plot as revealing, combine that with the human curiosity and you're left with an intriguing topic enough to keep you interested, but that's not what First Reformed is all about, it doesn't burden you with targeted showcasing, in other words, it doesn't force you to care as much as it invites you to experience a concern, I found that to be refreshing.
Ethan Hawk's stoic performance is what makes this all happen, he was absolutely brilliant as he depicts a tortured soul in need of healing, he without exaggeration sheds a light on a concerning matter after having reflected upon it for some time, Hawk grips you tightly as he delivers his performance and doesn't let go until the credit rolls out, it has to be on of his best so far and he had many to choose from.
The simple experiencing cinematography plays an important role in shaping the film's plot as it tells a story of its own, it's very pleasing to watch.
It comes as no surprise that I read to much into films but sometimes the essence of a story is buried deep down between its scenes, that's exactly what I felt with First Reformed, beautiful work of art.
