Review of First Man (2018) by Odin's M — 31 Dec 2018
Damien Chazelle shows himself to be back in form (though he does not quite reach the heights of Whiplash) with a character study of Neil Armstrong and the journey he takes to eventually get to the moon.
The cinematography, acting, and score are often breathtaking. The time jumping at the very beginning and the overuse of shaky hand held camera shots keep this film from reaching the level that it has the potential to.
I'm glad to say that the flag controversy is a non-issue as it can be seen throughout the film and on the moon itself. If I was grading only the last 30 minutes of the film my grade would much higher as the rest is far from perfect.
B+.
