Review of First Man (2018) by James C — 21 Oct 2018
A quiet exploration of the reserved to a fault Neil Armstrong contrasted with the intense claustrophobic often near death experiences that he has as an astronaut. The film achieves a great deal of emotional resonance with this approach helped significantly by great performances from Ryan Gosling and Claire Foy.
For such a slow methodical film I never felt like the pacing dragged things out overlong. The film resists the urge to indulge in spectacle and instead focuses on the actual man who was at the very center of one of humanities greatest achievements.
